The first season of I Am Jazz on TLC showcased the courage, heart, and humor of 15-year-old Jazz Jennings as cameras documented her triumphs and struggles from the perspective of a transgender teen.

Now, as the show returns for a second season, on June 8, Jazz is back with her supportive parents, Greg and Jeanette, and siblings, sister Ari, and twin brothers Griffen & Sander, continuing her efforts to balance school, sports, and a social life, along with her status as a transgender advocate – and XFINITY has a preview of the powerful first episode (see the video above).

In it, Jazz learns she needs surgery to avoid male puberty. She and her mother also decide to confront an anti-trans group that has been targeting their family. The stress of high school. Confronting haters. These are among the reasons TIME magazine named Jazz one of the “25 Most Influential Teens in 2014 and 2015 and why it won a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Reality Series.

Jazz was a YouTube star and burgeoning activist and author of a children’s book last year when I Am Jazz debuted. With unflinching honesty, it showed the teenager dealing with cruel insults and her loving parents working hard to do what’s best for their child.

But capturing the show’s heart, Time magazine’s James Poniewozik wrote that “I Am Jazz may be most radical for how ordinary it is.

“It’s not that Jazz’s gender identity is incidental here. The hour-length premiere especially focuses on it; her mother Jeanette remembers two-year-old Jazz asking, ‘When is the good fairy going to come and change my penis into a vagina?’ … But like many of TLC’s family series–Jon and Kate Plus Eight, Our Little Family, Sister Wives—I Am Jazz is about the extraordinary amidst the mundane. This is at heart a show about being a teen in the ‘burbs–changing schools, gossiping with friends, shopping, having trivial family arguments about money and curfews.”

All of season 1 of I Am Jazz is available for catch-up with XFINITY On Demand. To start watching online, click here.

In addition to the show, Jazz recently co-authored the book I Am Jazz, and with her parents founded the Transkids Purple Rainbow Foundation, a nonprofit devoted to support transgender youth and their families.
