One of the high comedy points of last night’s 72nd Annual Golden Globes Awards on NBC was bisexual comedian Margaret Cho appearing as new (and fictional) Hollywood Foreign Press member Cho Young Ja during the performance. Unfortunately, not everyone is happy about the portrayal, which spoofs North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, and a racial controversy has brushed up.
Responding to negative tweets labeling the skit as stereotypical and racist, Cho, who is currently hosting the new TLC series “All About Sex” on TLC, posted the following on her Twitter account:
“I’m of mixed North and South Korean decent. My people have been separated, incarcerated, starved, brainwashed and denied free speech for over 65 years. The only weapon I have is comedy. If you deny us the most basic human dignity, I have the right to make fun of you. I’m not playing the race card. I’m playing the rice card. ”
